5 Minutes To Doomsday

In Philosophy on January 17, 2007 at 10:58 pm

The New York Time recently carried an article quoting the declaration by the board of atomic affairs that we are now five minutes closer to doomsday as opposed to seven. To tell you the truth, I had to read this twice to understand what the five minutes actually meant! Five or fifty, the truth is that changes in the geopolitical climate around the world is accelerating our journey towards this impending doom. Can it ever be avoided? My opinion is ‘NO’.

Human beings have long lost the ability to distinguish between right and wrong. Our selfishness and greed increase every second and we have lost all forms of consciousness. We live in a world where only the present exists. The past and the future hold no sway over our being anymore. A few days ago I wrote in similar lines of our destiny. Every passing day enforces my belief that we will self extinguish ourselves. The next super volcano or giant meteorite that will collide with the earth will not leave anyone dead – there would not be anyone left to die!

Saturday Morning Horror Flick

In Philosophy on January 13, 2007 at 3:43 pm

Last night, I slept for four hours. At 5:00 am, with a cup of my favorite coffee in hand (Pete’s Coffee, mind you), I switched on the TV to CNN. Fifteen minutes later, I stopped listening and started thinking. What is the world coming to? Emergency in Somalia, girl decapitated by dad, Al-Qaeda rebuilding in Pakistan, the list goes on. Watching the news these days can be likened to watching a horror flick except for the fact that in the case of news, you have a live production every minute!

What is happening to the human race? Is this the way nature intended us to be? A definite answer to the question is impossible, yet looking back in history, one may conclude that we were no different earlier. From the Greeks under Alexander to the Iraqis under Saddam, we have spilled the blood of our friends, enemies and oppressors. Be it individual to individual or nation to nation, the reasons are almost often the same. Power, greed, jealousy – the list of our most coveted virtues go on and on.

Perhaps, this is how nature maintains a balance! How odd!
